A Change

I haven't looked at the blog in a month and just see that I've lost my background, making it very hard to read. So here is a simple background until I have time to figure out what went wrong. I also realize I haven't posted any summer photos and I want to do that. We went to a theme park and had another photo shoot. School starts next week. As usual, summer flew by and a lot remains that we didn't get to do.

Vacation Day

I took the day off. I was up at dawn with the kitties and went out and watered plants
and pulled all the weeds. Then I had time to write a letter, have some tea, get on the
computer, work on the jigsaw puzzle and almost finish painting the downstairs
bathroom before the kids were up.

We had a painting class in the afternoon, made enchiladas for supper, walked
around Weed Park, went down to the riverfront and discovered it was flooded.
Water was like 15 ft higher than normal! Came home and made floats and ate
them on the deck and played Monopoly. Now E&M are making carmel apples.

Yesterday we went to a nearby town where there is a 150 year old ice cream
shop. There was a long line for ice cream. Then we stopped at the farmers
market and bought a lot of blueberries and peaches - both super excellent.
Worth the drive back up there again.

This was just a really nice vacation day - exactly what one should be like. And
the tv was barely turned on.

Half Way Through Summer

Summer is going quickly. The kids are at home most of the day and a bit bored.

It's a big summer for L. She took Driver's Ed., got her license and we bought a 2008 Ford Focus that's pretty light blue. She also has her first job - shelving books at the library.

M has a job mowing 1 lawn, plus she mows ours and wants to wash the car(s).

E&S are taking horse riding lessons once a week and this week is art class for them.
L has show choir camp next week and state vocal camp coming up. L&M volunteer 1 morning a week at the library.

I have been gardening and buying lots of plants as they go on sale now. M and I finally got to the compost site and loaded up on the wonderful stuff to fill my raised bed and flower pots. I bought a gingko and a redbud tree. We've been invaded by japanese beetles, which are quite beautiful, but really eat up the cherry leaves.

I planted lettuce, carrots, we have tons of strawberries. Volunteer gourds galore, and 1 pumpkins so far. I am trying some new flowers and have added to the rock garden with interesting ground covers. I have no more space, but can't stop thinking about buying a few more things. Next year will come grapes and roses around the new deck, and I hope blueberries and more raspberries and a new raised bed.

Indoors, we have moved furniture around and taken some pieces to the basement for the summer, so the rooms aren't so crowded. We cleaned out the garage to fit the second car in. The kids have been very good this summer. Things stay neater and cleaner. They clean their own rooms and do a great job. M&E do a lot of cooking.

We got a little grill and grill out once a week - brats, chicken, hamburgers, pouches of vegetables.

I still love getting up early. I can now sit out on the deck on weekend mornings and drink tea and read, go for walks, garden. But too often, I just read in bed. The kids sleep late and stay up way too late. Later and later as the summer progresses. By the time they get up, it's too hot to go outside.

Almost July

I've let almost 2 months slip by. Lots going on.

I finally applied for 4 passports. L's arrived in 2 weeks, but not the others so far. Hers came with no problem, so maybe the others will too - but I have my doubts.

L has finished Driver's Ed and gotten her license. We've looked at cars and plan to buy one this week. She got insured yesterday and started driving on her own. She also has a summer job at the library and M has a summer job mowing a friend's lawn. They've also been volunteering at the library.

We've had 2 months of rain. We've had 7 storm sirens in 2 weeks. I went to visit Mom and she hurt her foot, went to the emergency room, had an allergic reaction to their antibiotics, spent the night in the hospital and now seems her usual self. Of course, I believe none of this would have happened if I hadn't gone to visit her. Again, the emergency room was a complete waste of time. You worry that something is really wrong and they do nothing, or they make things worse. Except for getting stitches, I'm not sure any emergency room visit I've had ended up worth it. All it did was end the anxiety of worrying.

We have a new deck. We have 2 new trees - gingko and redbud. We have lots of new plants. We have a mostly clean house and soon will have a clean garage if we are to put a second car in it.

Kids are horribly bored. We've been watching a LOT of free Family Video movies. Thank you, Family Video. They get a free coupon for every A on their report cards. In this family, that's a lot of free movies.

I'm in a Biggest Loser contest through work. I'm down 6 lbs in about 6 weeks. Have not been hungry until just recently. I plan to keep working on losing all summer. As usual, I am behind on organizing photos, but will try to add some. And I always think of other things I forgot to mention.

Influenced by Avatar, M is trying to plug her braid into Nibbles.

Confirmation

A quick Chinese dinner and then dropped M & E at dance rehearsal and we went to the church. Frances's confirmation was a nice ceremony. Then I dropped her off at dance rehearsal and visited a bit longer with Mom, A and J.

Dance Recital

Recital over for another year. We are such old pros at this, yet this year we forgot or lost so many costume pieces. 8 costumes, 11 pairs of shoes. If S joins again next year, they'll be even more to keep track of. It was fun. I enjoyed watching both nights and not working backstage.
