Garden

Here are some garden photos. I like the contrasts between the colors and the leaves.
The purple petunias. I really like the pink ones with the green edge.
The Japanese maple is new. My old one died, so I planted a new one in a different area and added plants around it.

My Mom

My mother died May 18 and her funeral was May 25.
I was out of town and busy and haven't had a chance to post.
Last Saturday my sister and I were at her house, cleaning up a little bit. Mom had gone into the hospital in early 2011 and expected to get back home, so everything in the house was pretty much as she left it that day. For a long time she'd been sorting through things and as usual, her counter was covered with stuff. As I cleaned off the counter I found all sorts of interesting things. Lots of recipes clipped from the newspaper, all dated. One from 1985. One from 1998. I found a letter my dad had written her in the 1970's from Aurora, IL. I found little flags that she had saved from the summer reading program at the library from the early 1960's. As you read books, you got to move your flag up the paper maiche mountain. I recognized those flags as soon as I found them and was so touched that Mom saved them. Weird, but neither of us have forgotten that contest.

Mom had canceled stamps she'd clipped, clothing tags she'd clipped, an old childhood whistle. In her box of important papers like insurance and certificates of deposit, she had little Heinz pickle pins and ketchup bottles. We are just beginning to touch the tip of the iceberg that is mom's house and her store of memories and I can see how I am like her. So many of these things mean something to me. I think she very much enjoyed looking through it all again in the last few years. And I will enjoy and be touched by what I find.

I would never have recalled that battered blue and white plastic whistle, but the moment I saw it, I remembered it. I'm looking forward to what else is waiting to be discovered. Things used to have a lot of sentimental meaning for me. I like to keep things from my childhood. I don't know why. They just make me feel good. They connect me to happy times. I didn't think I was as attached to objects as I used to be. Now I don't know. Likely in the next year, my house will fill up with many things from my Mom and Dad's house. Some are valuable to me and some I know I will take because no one else values them. Many little things would mean nothing to a stranger, but those little paper flags mean a great deal to me.

Octet

Here is L's octet. I'm only showing the feminine half of it, otherwise everyone will be very tiny.
She's sung a lot this week, but the vocals don't sound as good on her solos or others.

Prom

L enjoyed prom and had a lot of fun. And was very tired when it all ended about 5:30 am. I enjoyed seeing all the dresses. She went with a group of 16 friends and she won a tv at the after-prom event.

More Bridge

What else we saw:
Penn Station every day
Trinity Church at the edge of Wall St.
The Hoboken Ferry and we walked past where they are rebuilding the World Trade Center area
Lots of Central Park
The Met
Stores in the Times Sq area and bargain shopping near Wall St.
Our first day we started at Washington Sq Park, walked through Soho, through Chinatown, took the Staten Island Ferry. I would have liked to walk around Soho more.
We did not see The Village or the High Line or Chelsea galleries or any other museums. We also saw a little bit of the West Side, shops on Fifth Av.

Brooklyn Bridge

Finally, a warm sunny day. We didn't need jackets and the bridge was crowded with people out enjoying the sun. I've never been on the bridge with so many people. Made it a bit hard to enjoy the bridge, which I love. It is so beautiful and the story of building it is so amazing. And it still stands, handling more traffic than the builders could ever imagine.

More of Manhattan

And Hoboken.... Once M learned we were near the Cake Boss, we had to go see it. The line waiting to go in the bake shop was hours long, so we couldn't stay to try and go in and she was very disappointed.

L in front of the Rockefeller Ctr Atlas which is across the street from St. Patrick's. We went in there and also to St. Thomas, just up 5th Ave - which I think is a more beautiful church.

You see celebrities in NY - even dead ones. My friend treated us to Madame Tussade's wax museum, which was interesting. The girls took lots of photos and we were there for the grand opening of the Justin Bieber statue. He wasn't there, but the room was packed with press and school kids. We couldn't get near him. Johnny Depp was a favorite. I was impressed how many people my kids did know.
